A Reminder from Save Darien’s Wetlands : Flood Awareness Week 2010
Darien, Conn. [March 17, 2010] – March 17-March 21 is the National Weather Service’s Flood Safety Week. The goal of this week is to remind people of the danger and destructive nature of flood waters. FLASH.org (Federal Alliance for Safe Homes) asks these pointed questions: “Did you know that just six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock you off your feet and two feet of water can sweep an SUV off a road?”
Last weekend’s wind and water was another reminder for Darien. There was so much wind damage we hope the damage to the wetlands isn’t forgotten.
In 2008 Save Darien’s Wetlands, the flood watchdog group, presented the Town photographs and descriptions of twelve sites identified as areas that contribute to the flooding problems in Darien. In 2009 the Milone and McBroom report commissioned by the Town made recommendations for many of these same areas. When Stony Brook overflowed in last week’s storm it brought down trees, retaining walls, and escalated erosion around a Town drain and sewer manhole on Stony Brook at the Renshaw Road Bridge.
When the opportunity arises for the Town to obtain State and Federal financial assistance for the cost of storm damage, the erosion and damage at Renshaw Road should be on the list.
