PRESS RELEASE
Darien, Conn. [July 1, 2008] – Save Darien’s Wetlands announces a new video on their website (www.savedarienswetlands.com) and YouTube.com.
The presentation titled, “A Wetlands Primer” makes the connection between healthy wetlands and flooding. The presentation begins with a quote from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP): “Controlling flooding is perhaps the most important function a wetland can perform in Connecticut today.”
“We went to the experts—EPA, CT DEP, the Sierra Club, UCONN—and found that their websites all touted the importance of the wetlands in reducing the effect of flooding,” states SDW president Vanessa Wood. “We know this is a charged topic, however showing images of damaged wetlands and poor practices in Darien helps to make this relevant.”
Save Darien’s Wetlands has adopted the tag line “The flood watch dog group” as they continue watch and report to their membership the issues surrounding flood mitigation in Darien.
Mrs. Wood commented on the current state of flooding and the town’s mitigation plan: “There is a general sense of frustration. It’s disheartening that Darien failed on the first step of their mitigation plan and they are having to tackle the state permit again. Officials talk about less impermeable surfaces and less run off, while the list of missed opportunities for action continues to grow.”
